Although Final, op. 21, is the last of the six pieces, it might be one of the first Franck wrote. We know, in any case, that he played it at the inauguration of the organ at Sainte-Clotilde in 1859. The piece is dedicated to a contemporary organ virtuoso, Lefébure-Wély, and is structured as one long fanfare in B-flat major, with its starting point a demanding pedal solo for full organ. With its striking use of the organ’s tutti sounds, often as a dialogue between pedal and manual, and its
extrovert passage work, it is a precursor of the many later toccata-like virtuoso pieces for full organ that have become such a popular feature of
the French organ tradition.
