about

The three organ pieces on this release were all composed in the 1930s, while Europe was struggling to get back on its feet after a World War, and a new one was already brewing. Each of the three composers was at a different point in his creative career: Messiaen at the beginning, Nielsen heading toward the end, and young Alain,
who perished in the early days of World War II, can be said to have been at both the beginning and the end.
What the three have in common is that the works heard here are unusually distinctive in both form and style. The organ pieces are unlike anything written before, even by the composers themselves.
It is as though each of them in his own way, and in a large format, is seeking a new and genuine expression for the organ, free of rhythmic and tonal clichés, and liberated from the conventions, organ music was otherwise subject to at the start of the previous century. Thus Alain, Messiaen and Nielsen’s three organ monologues of the 30s hold a very special place among the organ art of the entire 1900s, however diversified this might have been in its styles and scope.
