Fantaisie in C Major, op. 16, is divided into three main parts, each built on distinctive tone colours. First is the ceremonial introduction, where the tonic sound is coloured by a reed voice (oboe) behind a closed swell box, which is more or less a signature sound for Franck. The next section is the melodically flowing second movement in F minor, where the solo trumpet in the swell box accompanies, and is sometimes replaced by, the flute voices on the other manuals. Finally, a slow movement in C major uses lightly floating voices (voix celeste) and a deep 32-foot pipe in the bass. Between the main sections are short “recitatives” intended to further the action. The fantasy is said to have been reworked several times after Franck first presented it at an organ demonstration at Cavaillé-Coll’s organ factory in 1856.
